Photographer – Jan Evans

Jan Evans is a sports and Countryside events photographer, all things action, from pitch-side at a match to working dogs in the field. Originally from rural California, Jan now lives in Co. Kilkenny, Southeast Ireland.

Talking to Jan Evans

While I always a landscape photographer, it was in Ireland that I turned to sports. I saw a hurling match, a Gaelic sport played predominantly in Ireland, and similar to the Scottish shinty. I upped my camera kit and shot hurling matches all over Ireland, in club pitches as well as in Ireland’s largest stadium, Croke Park in Dublin. While I still shoot the hurling, as well as rugby, football, and horse racing, most of my time now is spent on photographing the dogs in action, the tests and international competitions at Game Fairs, and field trials in both Ireland and the U.K.

Official Photographer

I was the official photographer for the 2017 European Championship of Irish Red Setters on Snipe, and the official photographer for the 2017 IKC Retriever Championship, I photographed the 2018 U.K. Cocker Spaniel Championship and the Skinner’s 2018 World Cup for Retrievers. My dog action images have appeared in The Field, Sporting Shooter, Irish Country Sports and Country Living, and several other publications, both in Ireland and the U.K., and my sports photos have been published in newspapers.

Why Polarstar?

People often ask me why I use Polarstar Photography as my business name, because it’s a bit unusual. Polarstar is an homage of sorts to my home place in California, where I spent my childhood, and where my some best memories lie, fishing endlessly for rainbow trout in the Polarstar Creek with my Irish Red Setter, Chief, by my side.

A Way with Dogs

I first met Ceri at The Game Fair in Scotland and we talked and talked! I’ve worked with CSJ on various gundog projects in England and Ireland over the past couple of years. Now I’m deeply honoured to be asked to be the official photographer for A Way with Dogs and I’m looking forward to photographing sheepdogs hugely. I hope you all enjoy the results.
